KUMI-Kumi District Health Officer, Dr Emanuel Ongala, attributed the
success to strong community mobilization, teamwork among health
workers and local leaders, and the positive response from parents.
“I want to thank the different stakeholders and the media for playing a
very big role in ensuring that this vaccination campaign, which was for
five days, runs smoothly. As a district, we performed exceptionally
well,” Dr Ongala said.
He said the district initially focused on reaching every eligible child,
adding that exceeding the target was an indication of the effectiveness of
the mobilization campaign.
“The target that the Ministry of Health adjusted for us at the end of
implementation was 48,315. By the end of day five, we had achieved
53,948 children immunized across the different sub-counties, giving us a
total coverage of 112 percent,” he said.
Dr Ongala said the campaign benefited from the involvement of village
health teams, health workers, local councils and leaders at different
levels.
He said vaccination teams operated from health centres and temporary
vaccination posts established in schools and other accessible locations
within communities.
“The mobilization was very okay by the village teams, health teams,
LCs and other leaders. The reception by parents was very good. Most
parents did not resist,” he said.
Although there were isolated cases of resistance, particularly in Kumi
Municipality, Dr Ongala said these were addressed through counselling.
