Kyere Sub County Has a Target of Planting 300,000 Trees by 2027
The Residents of Greater Kyere in Serere District have launched a massive tree planting campaign to restore depleted forest cover.
The initiative, dubbed Green Kyere Run, organized by Kyere Development Initiative, was launched at Akuoro Olupe Primary School on Friday.
Speaking to our reporter, the Mobilization Coordinator Otaala Joseph alias Ebekulasi said sons and daughters of Greater Kyere have united to reforest the area, noting that in the past you couldn’t see Akuja when in Kelim due to thick tree cover, but now boundaries are bare.
Otaala said they have secured 70,000 seedlings of Eucalyptus, Pine, Mango and Jackfruit, with a target of 300,000 seedlings by end of 2027.
Hon. Hellen Adoa, former Minister for Fisheries and former Woman MP Serere, said Kyere is just a pilot and they intend to expand to other districts of Teso.
She said trees will be distributed to women leaders, LCs, youth groups, churches and schools.

Teso Farmers have Been Urged to Keep Poultry as a Fallback Against Poverty
Farmers in the Katakwi and Teso sub-regions have been urged to embrace poultry as a means of improving household incomes, and ending reliance on land crop farming due to sharp failure in crop production as a result of unpredicted weather patterns that resulted in poor harvests in the two seasons.
Dr. Onyait Ariko, District Production Officer, Katakwi District Local Government, made the call yesterday after sharing his expertise with media in the district.
He stated that the region’s heavy reliance on food crops for both household and commercial purposes has limited opportunities for farmers to build sustainable sources of income.
According to Ariko Poultry, can help even low-income families, improve farmers’ ability to access special family needs.
He underscored the need for proper arrangements where a farmer can potentially put better practical management practices, especially disease control, noting that chicken is readily needed in the market.
